Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year! My name is Ms. Hanley and I am delighted to be your child’s second grade teacher. I am looking forward to enriching your child’s educational journey this coming year through many hands-on experiences, self-selected research projects, book reports, and much, much more! We are an arts prototype class and therefore your child will be receiving the following art lessons with trained professionals: dance, theatre, and visual arts. Our class will be full of excitement and learning!
Homework
In order for your child to be a successful reader and learner, he/she will need to read at home every night for a minimum of twenty minutes. Please make sure that this is done as it will make a huge difference in their success in school! Your child can read anything that he/she is interested in and I will have books available for taking home if he/she wishes to borrow a book from me. I will send home a weekly reading log every Monday that is to be filled out every night following reading. Your child is to fill the log out themselves with a summary of what was read or a reflection as to how he/she felt about what they read or what they learned. Reading Logs will be collected and reviewed on Fridays.
In addition, your child will have weekly spelling assignments that will be sent home on Monday and collected on Friday. Spelling tests are every Friday.
Your child will have one language-arts and one math assignment to complete each night that will be collected the following day. If your child’s homework is not completed or turned in, then he/she will be expected to complete the assignment during recess time.
Your child is taking home an extra copy of their Open Court anthology so that he/she can do homework assignments involving the stories in the book at home. Please take care of the anthology and keep it in a safe, clean place, as it will be collected later on in the year.
Conferences
If you ever need to talk to me about anything at all, please feel free to come and see me after school or contact me online. I hope that we can be in close communication so that your child can accomplish all that is possible throughout his/her second grade school year.
Uniforms
Just like last year, students must come to school wearing their school uniform. This simply means a white top and a navy blue bottom. If you are experiencing financial hardship, please let me know so that I can contact Mrs. Broome to see if she can provide your child with a set of uniforms.
Website
I will post weekly updates on our site so please try to visit the website every Monday if possible. This is also a place to read some of your child’s work samples, see photos of our class at work, and to get valuable information regarding upcoming events. If you do not have a computer at home, you can visit our school library or the public library for access to the internet.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I anticipate a wonderful school year and am thrilled to be teaching your child this year!
